Transportation Success Stories
Belgian Railway Company (SNCB) - Real-Time Traffic Management
The Challenge:
SNCB controls round trips of two high-speed train services between Brussels and Paris for over 142 million travelers as well as 7,200 million tons of cargo traffic per year. With the rapid growth in rail traffic throughout Belgium and the introduction of high-speed trains, SNCB quickly recognized the need for a new type of system to support the changing requirements and growing complexity of traffic management. SNCB wanted a new workstation for dispatchers that provided a flexible, interactive, high-performance automated system to monitor the train traffic network in real time and provide crucial information for planning, operational control, and decision-making based on statistical analysis of traffic load and delays.
SNCB wanted a flexible, interactive, high-performance automated system to monitor the train traffic network in real time and provide crucial information for planning, operational control, and decision-making sbased on statistical analysis of traffic load and delays. They knew the use of innovative technology was a necessity and they wanted object technology that was already proven in numerous production applications.
The Template Software Solution:
A new traffic control system, in production today, was built using Template's process automation products. It is more user-friendly and efficient, and enables dispatchers to follow the daily management of rail traffic from their automated workstations. Real-time graphical displays simultaneously show the real time working of the trains and the projected routes left to be completed. The system generates alerts through alarm mechanisms for any delays or problematic changes in the physical infrastructure such as railroad crossing warnings, changes in the flow of train traffic on a one-way portion of the rail, etc. The system then allows for immediate analysis and response to delays and the notification and distribution of traffic management changes. It also provides the creation of a history of prior decisions and an after-the-fact analysis of the traffic or structure delays to improve future service.

Northrop Grumman - Air Traffic Control
The Challenge:
Worldwide air travel today creates increasing concerns for the flying public-and new challenges for the air traffic controller: Keeping aircraft safe, on schedule, while reducing operations and maintenance costs is no simple task.
The Template Software Solution:
Northrop Grumman's Airspace Management System (AMS) meets the demands of today's congested air traffic control environments and is expandable to satisfy the air transportation growth requirements of the future. Tracking aircraft through crowded skies In severe weather; separating small aircraft from clutter; automating aircraft identification and tracking, furnishing clear; easily interpreted displays-AMS allows the controller to make quicker; better informed and more accurate decisions than ever before. Proven automation systems, and state-of-the-art radars, communications, and displays coupled with satellite-based Communications, Navigation, and Surveillance/Air Traffic Management technologies make AMS a low-risk, long-term solution. The system is modular, flexible and fully redundant, ensuring very high operational availability.

City of Berlin - Public Transport Automation
The Challenge:
The City of Berlin needed a state-of-the-art distributed system to automate the management and scheduling of buses and trams. The system was required to interface with many external systems, including GPS, digital and analog radio systems, and train and subway automation systems. It was to provide real time display information on the position and adherence to schedule of 2,700 buses and trams.
The Template Software Solution:
Alcatel and its integration partner are using Template technology as an integration and development platform to create a high performance, distributed system in a very short time. The inherent flexibility and reusability of Template Technology is quickly providing Alcatel with a generic solution, much of which will be reusable in systems which it expects to build for other cities worldwide. This will give Alcatel a distinct competitive edge in today's highly-competitive marketplace.
Template is helping Alcatel deliver a high-quality, high-performance system that is substantially reusable in future systems. This solution is assisting Alcatel's Transport Automation Systems Division in reducing the time to market for new systems that provide flexible, cost-effective ways to react to changing market demands.
